The fifth-grade teacher at Atlas Preparatory Academy, Katherine Gonzales was arrested on March 5 and was charged with one count of first-degree sexual assault of a child under 13 years of age. She also pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault of a child in August.

On September 28, the 25-year old teacher from Milwaukee Wisconsin, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulted her 11-year-old male student and she was sentenced to five-year in prison.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, she has been out on bail since March and during those days, she told the court that she has been receiving treatment.

On September 26, during her sentencing, she was emotional saying sorry for her unthinkable actions.

Gonzales also mentioned that her treatment in the last few months has helped her have fewer flashbacks from her ordeal when she was sexually assaulted when she was in college.

Judge Mark Sanders stated that the severe sentence, in this case, is meant to scare off others from committing similar crimes even though that Gonzales and the young student never escalated to sexual intercourse.

The boy or his family did not appear in the court for Gonzalez’s sentencing.

The prosecutor stated that Gonzalez had been messaging one of her male students on SnapChat.

Based on the criminal complaint, Gonzales had contact with the student in her car ad at her home. The two also stroked each other's’ private parts through their clothing, prosecutors said.
The teacher asked the student not to tell anyone about their relationship because she could go to jail and lose her job.

Gonzalez claimed that her male student is chronically depressed and confessed that she was saying things to make the 11-year old student happy. She told the police officers that she wanted the child to feel that someone cared.

On March 3, school officials sent a letter to parents informing them that one of the teachers had been placed on administrative leave.

Michelle Lukacs, the executive director of Atlas Preparatory Academy signed the letter, and stated that a teacher at the school has been accused of having inappropriate conduct with a young student outside of school grounds, the Milwaukee Police Department is investigating the report.
