Women tend to ignore the early signs of cancer due to several reasons such as lack of knowledge, financial difficulties, and fear.
Sometimes they just don’t know what the danger signs are, they would just brush them aside and wait until the pain or tumor size are too great to ignore.
One more thing, most cancer signs mimic symptoms of other health problems, so it’s easy to ignore them.
Most health experts will advise you to be more aware of your own body, and if you will notice unusual pain or any changes, it would be better to consult a doctor.
Here are some cancer symptoms women usually ignore.
Abnormal periods or pelvic pain:
It is unusual for women to have irregular periods, so if you start bleeding between periods or your flow suddenly becomes heavier month after month or if you have pelvic pain.It is recommended to see a doctor since these are signs of ovarian, uterine or other vaginal cancers.
Postmenopausal Bleeding:
It is not usual for women to have some light spotting after menopause. According to Maurie Markman, MD, an oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, if you suddenly start a period again and if it is consistent, then it could be an early sign of uterine cancer.
Breast dimpling, discoloration or other changes:
Unusual lump in your breast is a sign of breast cancer. But, there are also some other signs to look for like breast becoming dimpled, a nipple inverting, swelling, tenderness, or slight discoloration of the skin to a deeper red or pink, it could be cause for concern, according to the chief cancer control officer for the American Cancer Society, Rich Wender, MD.
“Those signs don’t necessarily mean it’s cancer, but that’s exactly why women delay seeking help because they’re hoping it’s nothing,”
Bloating:
If you notice that you are bloated even after your period or you feel consistently constipated, then it could be a sign of ovarian cancer or uterine cancer. Moshe Shike MD (gastroenterologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City) says
“Ask a doctor to take a closer look.” Many ovarian cancer patients report having experienced vague symptoms, like bloating, that they ignored for months before seeking help”
Chronic Coughing:
If you experience a cough for more than three weeks or more and don’t have other symptoms that usually accompany a cold or allergies, like stuffy nose, then it could be an early sign of lung cancer. Dr. Markman says, “If it’s different than your regular cough and if it persists or you cough up a little blood, that’s significant,”. Leukemia can also cause symptoms like bronchitis or a bad chest cold.
Stomach pain or nausea:
It would be better to see a doctor if you notice persistent stomach pain or you become suddenly nauseous all the time and you are not getting better. It could be a simple ulcer, but it could also be a sign of leukemia or esophageal, liver, pancreatic or colorectal cancer.
Frequent fevers or infection:
If you notice yourself getting feverish frequently and getting more sick, it could be an early sign of leukemia. Observe the flu-like symptoms, like achiness or fever which doesn't go away.
Difficulty swallowing:
A sore throat is a common sign of throat or stomach cancer, could also be an early sign of lung cancer. If a sore throat can make swallowing hard or painful and it persists for a few weeks and get worse, then it would be better to seek a health expert.
Blood in the stool:
Blood in the stool could be a sign of colon cancer, it is pretty common in people under the age of 50 in which colon cancer screening is first recommended. Dr. Wender says “It’s easy to dismiss it as hemorrhoids or constipation, and if the problem comes and goes, people reassure themselves that nothing’s wrong especially younger people,” he says. “But blood in a bowel movement is never normal, so get it checked out.”
Chronic headache:
If you never get headaches or migraines that often, and suddenly you notice that you suddenly have one every day, it could be a symptom of a brain tumor in which the pain causes by pressing on nerves.
Persistent Fatigue:
Once in awhile everyone feels tired , and get energized after a good night sleep. However, if you notice that you’re tired almost every day for more than a month and accompany with shortness of breath when you didn’t before. Leukemia and lymphoma usually cause of persistent fatigue It would be recommended to see a doctor. Dr, Wender says “Most of the time it won’t be cancer, but get it checked because you never know”.
Unexplained Weight loss:
Weight loss is a good thing for those who are on a diet and want to shed their pounds. However, if you suddenly lose your appetite when you usually have a good appetite, and not experiencing any problems to cause that, then it is recommended to see a doctor. Weight loss can be a sign of esophageal, pancreatic, liver, and colon cancer, but it is more common sign of leukemia and lymphoma.
Excessive Bruising:
If you notice bruises showed up all the time, specifically in strange places like hands or fingers, then it could very alarming. Unusual bruising can be a sign of leukemia, according to Cancer Treatment of America.
Noticeable skin changes:
In the U.S., skin cancer is the most common cancer and it kinda hard to recognize the early signs of it. Dr. Wender says “Skin cancer is a tough one—many people think freckles, moles, or a darker age spot is just like the others they’ve had.” If you notice a mole changes its color like it is getting darker, larger or becoming raised, then it is advised to have it checked.
Sores or pain in the mouth:
If you notice sores in your mouth that don’t heal, pain that does not subside, white or red patches on the gums or tongue accompanied with swelling or numbness of the jaw it could be a sign of some mouth cancers. If symptoms persist consult your doctor.
