A deadly pneumonic airborne plague which is currently spreading across Africa is being feared to be the “deadliest and most rapid form of plague”,. This deadly disease is caused by the same bacteria that killed at least 50 million people in Europe in the 1300’s which called Black Death.
A WHO official said: “The risk of the disease spreading is high at national level...because it is present in several towns and this is just the start of the outbreak.”
However, this life-threatening disease spreading now is different to the bubonic strain which was in the Black Death’s history. Pneumonic can spread through coughing and can kill within 24 hours.
In Madagascar, it is more than 1,300 cases have been reported and two-third of those are suspected to be pneumonic that makes the health officials worried since this epidemic can spread through coughing, sneezing or spitting.
As many as 50 aid workers are believed to have been among the people infected and in the African branch of WHO said that 93 people have already lost their lives due to the disease.
Moreover, this plague has caused an alarm due to its regular outbreak and how quickly it has spread plus the growing number of fatalities. it is more deadly than the bubonic variation of the disease which wiped out a third of Europe’s population in 1300’s
But if it caught in time, just like the bubonic form it can also be treated with common antibiotics.
International agencies have poured out help and sent more than one million doses of antibiotics to Madagascar and nearly 20,000 respiratory masks have also been donated.
According to officials this deadly outbreak is the first time the disease has affected the two biggest cities, Antananarivo and Toamasina in the island of Indian Ocean,
Since the outbreak is spreading quickly it is revealed by health officials that nearby countries have received heightened alert which include Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Comoros, Mauritius and six other countries. While Seychelle, South Africa and La Reunion is now deemed at risk of this deadly disease.
However, amid widespread fears it could reach Europe, thus could bring chaos and destruction, The WHO officials has emphasized the overall global risk is considered to be “low”
