It’s been 45 years when former President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law or Batas Militar in the Philippines. Proclamation No. 1081 was dated on 21st of September 1972 but it was actually signed on the 17th of September. The formal announcement or promulgation of the proclamation was made only at seven-thirty on the evening of 23rd of September.
He had also commanded his military collaborators to start arresting his political opponents and close down all media and retail (fashion, food, religious, sports) establishments about twenty-two hours before the announcement.

In anticipation of the mass protest to mark the 45th anniversary of Martial Law, President Rodrigo Duterte declared September 21st as the “Day of Protest”. Work in the government offices and in public schools across the country are suspended.
Thousands of people such as students and different groups gathered in various parts of the country to look back on the Philippine history following the declaration of Martial Law.
Youth groups, Lumad and hundreds of students of University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman held a demonstration in front of Quezon City Hall to denounce the Duterte administration’s feared to propose a nationwide martial law.
There were also some major protests in Metro Manila in which Commissionision on Human Rights (CHR) in Quezon City for the Manlaban Para sa Karapatan (Fight For Rights) demonstration, and at the Luneta Park in Manila organized by the Movement Against Tyranny.
The first rally with the CHR began at the Misa para sa Katarungan (Mass for Justice) at the UP Diliman Chapel at 2 pm. Afterwards, the protesters’ march to the CHR.
The second rally, also began at 2 pm which started with the gathering in front of the Bantayog ng mga Bayani, followed by a 4 pm mass at the same venue. Later, the protesters would join others at the CHR.
The unveiling of the statue of devoted nationalist and human rights advocate Jose W. Diokno coincided with the rally at the CHR. Vice President Leni Robredo and among others attended the said event.
At Least 40,000 people were expected to draw in Luneta park in which malicious text messages cited by the rally organizers was meant to discourage the participants but showed confidence that the “sabotage” tactic would not intimidate people from attending the protest.
Meanwhile, other groups who opposed the administration’s policies and the supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte held their respective demonstrations at Mendiola Park Near Malacañang and Plaza Miranda in Quiapo Manila.
