Typically, the most common bacteria are located in the kitchen such as on the kitchen counter, dirty dishes, or even clean dishes that weren’t completely cleaned.
The sink is also a common location of bacteria because all sorts of waste are passing through it. According to the newscientist.com stainless steel sink can host 18,000 of bacteria per square inch compared to its porcelain and copper counterparts because if a stainless steel sink surfaces started to degrade it could create a breeding ground for a deadly disease called Legionnaires’ disease.
Legionnaires' Disease is a form of atypical pneumonia caused by any type of Legionella bacteria.
Signs and symptoms include a cough, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle pains and headaches. Nausea, vomiting may also occur, this often started two to ten days after being exposed.
In a study done by Wilco van der Lugt a safety engineer with expertise in Legionnaires’ prevention, 50% of all tests turned up positive for Legionnaires’ disease after a tested water with or without the Legionella Anisa bacteria ran through a variety of different tap system.
It turned out the stainless steel system is the most fertile ground for the disease to survive. Thus, the degradation of the protective coating on stainless steel fixtures led to rust allows the bacteria to multiply.
The disease has been on the rise for the last 15 years. So, one of the preventive measures is to keep your hot water taps between 122 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, if your tap system is not contaminated then you are free from the disease, but Legionella bacteria can also be present in some other places like bathtubs, so it is best to be safe if you suspect something.
