The highly anticipated meeting of the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and the United States President Donald Trump took place on Sunday night, November 12 at the Gala dinner of the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.
Before the world leaders posed for a group photo and started their dinner. President Donald trump and President Duterte shook hands twice, they were also pictured toasting with champagne.
The two leaders sat together and they engaged in a conversation before the first course was served, they were actually closely watched as both are notable for being outspoken.
Pres. Duterte has stated earlier, he was certain that US Pres.Trump wouldn’t prompt the human rights issues when they met since Pres. Trump previously praised his campaign against illegal drugs. He also mentioned that if the US leader raised the subject, he would tell Trump to “lay off”.
Eventually, it seems like the two leaders have already established a good rapport together, as the Philippine president sang the popular Filipino song “Ikaw” (You) requested by the US president.
President Duterte said as he finished the song:
"Ladies and gentlemen, I sang uninvited a duet with Ms Pilita Corrales upon the orders of the commander in chief of the United States,"
